This herbaceous perennial was originally native to a large swath of the Midwestern United States. Currently uncommon in the wild, this species of Echinacea is widely cultivated, and is well-suited to varied growing conditions, coastal or mountain, east or west. The plant prefers full sun and rich, moist soil. Sow seed in the early spring in flats outdoors or in the greenhouse, and transplant seedlings outside in mid-spring. It is also fairly easy to seed this plant directly into the space where it will grow. Thin or transplant to one foot apart.
