Sheep sorrel grows best in loose, loamy, and slightly acidic soils with full sun exposure. A member of the Polygonaceae family, this herb is a leafy and vegetable-like plant imparting a pleasant lemon flavor to foods. Dried leaves are used for making teas or tinctures whereas young fresh leaves can be added to salads or used as a seasoning.

Rumex acetosella is a sprawling herb that features green, arrow shaped leaves that grow from a rosette center. It grows to a height of twelve to eighteen inches and can spread up to two feet in width. Sheep sorrel sends out flower stalks with whorled, tiny red flowers in the spring and summer months.

Seeds can be planted directly outside after the danger of frost has passed in early spring. Sow about half an inch deep in lightly turned soil and keep the area evenly moist. Seeds should germinate within six to ten days and plants are slightly frost resistant. Sheep sorrel can also do well in container planters.
