Albizia julibrissin, the silk tree or mimosa tree, is a species in the Fabaceae family native to Asia. The Fabaceae family is a diverse group of agriculturally important flowering plants also known as the legume, pea or bean family.

Silk tree was introduced to the US in 1745 to be cultivated as an ornamental for its fragrant flowers. The seeds of this tree are wind dispersed and can survive long periods of drought which led to an invasive status in the southern half of the US.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine silk tree is commonly referred to as ‘happiness tree’ due to its nervine properties and promotion of positive emotional state. The bark can be used in the form of a tea or tincture and can also be powered to make capsules or external pastes. Consuming as a tea before bed can soothe the nerves to promote a night of sound sleep.

This bark can be incorporated in skin care routines in the form of serums, tinctures, and creams, and is typically used for general skin irritation.
