Sweet woodruff thrives under shade in well-drained soils with medium to full moisture. Galium odoratum’s sweet smelling dried leaves have been used as an aromatic component for beverages, foods, and perfumery.

A member of the Rubiaceae family, sweet woodruff has sprawling limbs, many soft green leaves, and beautiful, small white flowers, making it a popular ground cover. It grows eight to twelve inches in height and spreads rapidly with its creeping runners. Leaves can be harvested at any time and flowers are only in bloom from late spring to early summer.

Seeds can be planted directly into garden soil while temperatures are still lower than average in the early spring. Simply scatter seeds over a selected area, and young plants should emerge within 30 to 65 days.
