Yarrow grows well in dry to medium, well-drained loamy soil and full sun exposure. Achillea millefolium is a lovely and hardy flowering perennial that produces highly aromatic, sweet-smelling flowers. These flowers grow in compact flat-topped groupings of 20 or more individual florets that range in color from white to pink and yellow. Yarrow flowers are also distilled into an essential oil that is a favorite in aromatherapy and skin care recipes.

Achillea millefolium, a member of the Asteraceae family, is distinguishable by its many feathered, plume-like, soft green leaves. Yarrow can grow up to three feet tall and about four inches across. The plant blooms in late spring through summer and is a favorite to pollinators. The best time to harvest its flowers and leaves is when it first comes into full bloom.

To start from seed, scatter lightly over prepared potting soil in planters six to eight weeks before the last frost date. Keep the topsoil evenly moist. Place planters in a sunny location or window and seedlings should emerge within 21 days. Young plants can be transplanted outdoors once the danger of frost has passed. Yarrow can also be propagated by division.
